Odds and Ends-Mystery: Sue Grafton's Alphabet Series Mystery (Alphabet Series) By Sue Grafton

Meet Author Sue Grafton

Sue Grafton is published in 28 countries and 26 languages-including Estonian, Bulgarian, and Indonesian. She's an international bestseller with a readership in the millions. She's a writer who believes in the form that she has chosen to mine: "The mystery novel offers a world in which justice is served. Maybe not in a court of law," she has said, "but people do get their just desserts." And like Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald, Robert Parker and the John D. MacDonald-the best of her breed-she has earned new respect for that form. Her readers appreciate her buoyant style, her eye for detail, her deft hand with character, her acute social observances, and her abundant storytelling talents.

The Alphabet Series-Beginnings

"A" is for Alibi

Mystery novel featuring tough talking former policeman, now wise-cracking female private investigator, Kinsey Millhone. A twice divorced loner with few possessions and fewer personal attachments, Kinsey's got a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes. When Nikki comes out of jail after serving an eight year sentence for murdering her philandering husband, she calls in Kinsey Millhone to track down the real killer. If there's one thing that makes Kinsey feel alive, it's playing on the edge.  When her investigation turns up a new corpse, more suspects, and a new reason to kill, Kinsey discovers the edge is closer t-and sharper-than she thinks.(1982)

"B" is for Burglar

Although business has been slow lately for P.I. Kinsey Millhone, she's reluctant to take on the case of locating Beverly Danziger's sister Elaine Boldt. It's a small matter that Beverly should be able to handle herself. So why is she enlisting Kinsey's services? Beverly claims she needs Elaine's signature on some documents so that she can collect a small inheritance. But the whole affair doesn't sit well with Kinsey. And if there's something she's learned in her line of work, it's to always follow your instincts…

Kinsey's hunch proves true when she begins her inquiries into Elaine's whereabouts and discovers that the attractive widow was last seen in a flashy lynx coat boarding a plane for Boca Raton. But the more Kinsey searches for Elaine the more questions she encounters. Is Elaine's disappearance tied in to the brutal murder several months ago of one of her bridge partners? And what happened to Elaine's Persian cat who seems to have also vanished?

Things take a turn for the worse when a stranger vandalizes the home of one of Elaine's neighbors and another neighbor turns up murdered. With her reputation and career on the line, Kinsey risks all to find a missing woman and a killer who's waiting in the shadows to strike again… (1985)

"C" is for Corpse
How do you go about solving an attempted murder when the victim has lost a good part of his memory? It's one of Kinsey's toughest cases yet, but she never backs down from a challenge. Twenty-three-year-old Bobby Callahan is lucky to be alive after a car forced his Porsche over a bridge and into a canyon. The crash left Bobby with a clouded memory. But he can't shake the feeling it was no random accident and that he's still in danger…

The only clues Kinsey has to go on are a little red address book and the name "Blackman." Bobby can't remember who he gave the address book to for safekeeping. And any chances of Bobby regaining his memory are dashed when he's killed in another automobile accident just three days after he hires Kinsey.

As Kinsey digs deeper into her investigation, she discovers Bobby had a secret worth killing for--and unearthing that secret could send Kinsey to her own early death…(1986)

"V" is for Vengeance

A spiderweb of dangerous relationships lies at the heart of V is for Vengeance, Sue Grafton's daring new Kinsey Millhone novel. This title will be released on November 14, 2011.
A woman with a murky past who kills herself-or was it murder? A spoiled kid awash in gambling debt who thinks he can beat the system. A lovely woman whose life is about to splinter into a thousand fragments. A professional shoplifting ring working for the Mob, racking up millions from stolen goods. A wandering husband, rich and ruthless. A dirty cop so entrenched on the force he is immune to exposure. A sinister gangster, conscienceless and brutal. A lonely widower mourning the death of his lover, desperate for answers, which may be worse than the pain of his loss. A private detective, Kinsey Millhone, whose thirty-eighth-birthday gift is a punch in the face that leaves her with two black eyes and a busted nose.

And an elegant and powerful businessman whose dealings are definitely outside the law: the magus at the center of the web.

V: Victim. Violence. Vengeance.

(I apologize for Bloggers problem with the last letter of the alphabet.)

Zane is an African American author of erotic fiction who has written over two dozen novels. She is best known for her novel Addicted. Hot Box

"Hot Box" is a baseball drill that can be played with three or more players and two to four bases. The players take turns being fielders and runners, ultimately trying to tag the rest of the players out. In The Hot Box, best friends Milena and Lydia are playing the game with Jacour, Yosef, Glenn, and Phil. The only problem: the men do not realize that they are playing. Milena lives a sheltered and dismal existence and has not allowed a man to touch her body in eight years . . . until now. Lydia dreams of getting away from small-town America but, until she can make that happen, she is prepared to do whatever it takes to continue to have her bills paid . . . on time. Good sex always does the trick. Two women. Four men. Two love triangles. Reading has never been this hot because, once again, Zane is taking you outside the box.

Contemporary Urban Fiction-E. Jerome Dickey and Friends

Meet Eric Jerome Dickey

Eric Jerome Dickey was born in Memphis, Tennessee and attended the University of Memphis (the former Memphis State), where he earned his degree in Computer System Technology. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in engineering.
After landing a job in the aerospace industry as a software developer, Eric Jerome Dickey's artistic talents surfaced, inspiring him to become an actor and a stand-up comedian. Yet Eric quickly found out that writing was something he could do and do well. From creative writing classes to avidly consuming the works of his favorite authors, Eric Jerome Dickey began to shape a writing career of his own.

Having written several scripts for his personal comedy act, he started writing poetry and short stories. Short stories, though, didn't seem to fulfill Eric Jerome Dickey's creative yearnings. Eric says, "I'd set out to do a ten-page story and it would go on for three hundred pages." So Eric kept writing and reading and sending out query letters for his novels for almost three years until he finally got an agent. "Then a door opened," Eric says. "And I put my foot in before they could close it." And that door has remained opened, as Eric Jerome Dickey's novels have

Contemporary Romance-Nicholas Sparks

According to the Romance Writers of America, "Two basic elements comprise every romance novel: a central love story and an emotionally-satisfying and optimistic ending." Both the conflict and the climax of the novel should be directly related to that core theme of developing a romantic relationship, although the novel can also contain subplots that do not specifically relate to the main characters' romantic love. Other definitions of a romance novel may be broader, including other plots and endings or more than two people, or narrower, restricting the types of romances or conflicts.

One of the stars of Contemporary Romance is Nicholas Sparks. Meet Nicholas and take a look at some of the wonderful novels he has written.

Nicholas Sparks is one of the world's most loved authors. His novel, A Bend In the Road, reached number two in the New York Times bestseller list and The Rescue was a number one. His other books, The Notebook, Message In a Bottle and A Walk to Remember - were international bestsellers that have been translated into more than thirty languages and adapted into major films. He is also co-author of Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding. Nicholas Sparks lives in North Carolina with his wife and children.

Fantasy-The Twilight Saga (Stephenie Meyer)

Twilight
Excerpt:

About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him----and I didn't know how dominant that part might be----that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Bella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Bella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Bella, the person Edward holds most dear.

Romantic Suspense

Wikipedia explains Romantic Suspense as follows:

Romantic suspense involves an intrigue or mystery for the protagonists to solve. Typically, however, the heroine is the victim of a crime or attempted crime, and works with a hero, who tends to be in a field where he would serve as a protector, such as a police officer, FBI agent, bodyguard, or Navy Seal. By the end of the novel, the mystery is resolved and the interaction between the hero and heroine has evolved into a solid relationship. These novels primarily take place in contemporary times, but authors such as Amanda Quick have broadened the genre to also include historical timeframes.

Historicals-Various Authors

HIS NOBLE PROMISE, Adrienne Basso

The author weaves two independent story lines in this tale of mystery and romance. The mystery begins when a surprised Earl of Mulgrave, Richard Cameron, finds a pale, sweat-drenched woman in his bed, writhing during the agony of escalating labor pains. He recalls their brief illicit liaison and promises her he will care for her newborn child. When the new mother dies moments after the birth of her daughter, Richard bribes a priest into falsifying marriage records in order to support his parental claim. Through the passing years, Richard loves and cares for the child and is unaware that someone else lurks in the shadows waiting to claim the child as his. References to the "who's the father" mystery are sprinkled throughout the novel and aren't resolved until the book closes.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
Christiana Dodd

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT is the second book in Christina Dodd's Governess Series. In 1839, three young English ladies take destiny into their own hands and open the Distinguished Academy of Governesses. When Queen Victoria threatens rakish Devon Mathewes, earl of Kerrich, he must find a way to present the appearance of respectability, kindness and decency. The earl is stunned to find himself attracted to the frumpy governess in spite of her thick glasses and prim attitude. You'll enjoy watching Devon and Pamela as their romance unfolds and revisiting Charlotte and Wynter, the hero and heroine of the first novel in the series, RULES OF SURRENDER. It's a well-written novel with delightful characters, an interesting plot, and Dodd's trademark humor.

THE SEDUCTION
Nicole Jordan

THE SEDUCTION is destined to become one of my all time favorites. It's a scorching sizzler with a romantic hero who has the stuff that dreams are made of. He's bold, dashing, passionate and tender.

The Seduction is a fitting first offering in Nicole Jordan's "Notorious" Series. Tall, handsome Lord Damien Sinclair is appropriately known as "Lord Sin", a rake and adventurer who takes his pleasures where he finds them. His romantic exploits and sexual conquests are well-know throughout the bedrooms of Regency England. In a twist of misfortune, Damien's sister, Olivia's reputation is ruined by a ill-fated tryst and she is seriously injuried in a sham elopement. He vows to destroy Aubrey Trent, the young nobleman who is responsible.Trent loses eveything to Damien in a card game, leaving his family penniless.

Trent's widowed sister, Vanessa, is determined to protect her foolish brother at all cost. When she offers to act as companion to Lord Sin's bedridden sister, Damien agrees--with one scandalous condition. He wants the beautiful noblewoman to become his mistress. With this unholy bargain, the seduction begins, as Damien teaches Vanessa to become skilled in pleasing him in bed.

This delicious romance is not for the faint hearted, as steamy emotions rise from the pages and enthrall the unsuspecting reader. The interplay between the secondary characters also adds an additional bit of spice to the overall mix, blending all the plots and sub-plots into a tasty mixture of pure delight. As luck would have it, Damien, the hunter may well be captured by Vanessa, the game. Expect your emotions to be fully engaged as you read this passionate novel. It's an exciting battle of the sexes layered with the redeeming power of love.

Historicals: Amanda Quick

Amanda Quick
A pseudonym used by
Jayne Ann Krentz

Most of us read fiction for pleasure, but some of us gravitate especially to works about the past. People have enjoyed historical fiction since 800 BC when Homer wrote about the Trojan War in the Iliad. The worlds to which historical fiction carries us may seem utterly different from our own - but they really existed. A deep understanding of the past can help us understand our own time and our own motivations better. And by blending history and fiction, a novel lets us do more than simply read history: it lets us participate in the hopes, fears, passions, mistakes and triumphs of the people who lived it.

Sandra was born on March 12, 1948 in Waco, Texas and raised in Ft. Worth. She is nothing if not serious when it comes to her work. When the show experienced mass layoffs, however, Sandra found herself out of work.

Marriages of Convenience

A marriage of convenience is a marriage between two people for practical or financial reasons and
not for love or intimacy. Example: Widowed women of the old west in the U.S. often agreed to marriages of convenience in order to survive the hardships of homesteading during the 1800s.

Contemporary Romance

Paradise, Judith McNaught
Meredith Bancroft is blonde, beautiful, successful - and alone. She remains mysteriously aloof from the Chicago society in which she circulates. Her secret lies with dynamic tycoon, Matthew Farrell.

Two strong-willed characters maintain 11 years of unwarranted hostility based on a series of misunderstandings in this engaging romance, McNaught's hardcover debut. Teenage socialite heiress Meredith Bancroft has a quick and disastrous secret marriage to unsuitably penniless Matt Farrell. Her domineering father tells each of them a series of damaging lies and speedily arranges a divorce.

A decade later, Meredith, now vice-president of a department-store chain and engaged to a prominent banker, meets Matt again. The highly successful CEO of his own conglomerate, Matt has a well-deserved reputation as a ruthless corporate raider, and when he hears of Meredith's aggressive plans for her chain's expansion the two clash explosively. To complicate matters, Meredith discovers that they have never been divorced.

Although marred by a melodramatic and contrived terrorist subplot, the ending is never in doubt. But by portraying her protagonists with verve and good humor, and adroitly mixing corporate maneuvers and passionate encounters, McNaught has produced a captivating tale. The author of "Whitney, My Love", "A Kingdom of Dreams" and "Almost Heaven" makes her mark on contemporary romance. Paradise is one of my all time favorite keepers. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do, each time I read it.

Perfect, Judith McNaught

Now a lovely and vivacious young woman, she was a respected teacher in her small Texas town, and she passionately lived her ideals. Zachary Benedict was an actor/director whose Academy Award-winning career had been shattered when he was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife. After the tall, ruggedly handsome Zack escaped from a Texas prison, he abducted Julie and forced her to drive him to his Colorado mountain hideout. She was outraged, cautious, and unable to ignore the instincts that whispered of his innocence. He was cynical, wary, and increasingly attracted to her. Passion was about to capture them both in its fierce embrace...but the journey to trust, true commitment, and proving Zack's innocence was just beginning....

Angel Falls, Kristan Hannah
Angel Falls is a wonderful romance. No dashing hero, sweet damsel in distress, or contrived drama in this novel. Author Kristin Hannah presents a compelling story of love and marriage featuring ordinary people facing real live issues. The story, set in northwest Washington State, takes off when Mikaela (Mike) Campbell falls from her horse, hits her head and laps into a coma. Her husband Liam must care for their two children and hold on to his faith that Mike will recover despite medical opinions to the contrary. He visits his wife every day and also takes care of the day to day things for his family, trying to keep everything as normal as possible. Here's a true hero. Liam stumbles upon souvenirs and pictures from his wife's hidden first marriage to Julian True, international movie star. He realizes that Julian may be the key to bringing his wife back to life.
